Each packaging material has its specific production process; according to EU directives economic operators must take actions to reduce the amount of packaging waste and increase its recyclability; moreover, according to the EU priorities, plastic packaging should decrease in favour of more sustainable alternatives.

Packaging waste is mainly recycled (78%), even if significant rooms for improvement exist analyzing more in detail specific waste flows (e.g. mixed packaging)
Within this context technologies and managerial solutions addressing both packaging waste reduction and reuse / recycling possibilities are envisaged (acting on the production phase or utilization phase).
